چکیده

Microwave plasma sources at atmospheric pressure have a variety of different applications and therefore are object of intense research. This paper covers the spectroscopic investigation of an atmospheric pressure microwave plasma torch and experiments concerning the abatement of the perfluorinated compounds CF4 and SF6. By means of optical emission spectroscopy the gas temperature of a humid air plasma was determined to 3600 K by using the AΣX 2 Π-transition of the OH radical. The electron temperature was determined to 5800 K by a Boltzmann-plot of atomic oxygen lines. The experiments concerning the decomposition of CF4 and SF6 showed that destruction and removal efficiencies (DRE) of over 99 % can be achieved and therefore the abatement of waste gases is a promising application of the presented microwave plasma torch.

Electromagnetic Waves in Cavity Design

Understanding electromagnetic wave phenomena is very important to be able to design RF cavities such as for atmospheric microwave plasma torch, microwave vacuum oscillator/amplifier, and charged-particle accelerator. This chapter deals with some electromagnetic wave equations to show applications to develop the analytic design formula for the cavity. For the initial and crude design parameter, ...

Spatial Characteristics and Application of Atmospheric Pressure Microwave Nitrogen Plasma Torch

Abstract. Microwave (MW) torches are typically used to produce equilibrium plasmas for various environmental or industrial applications. We use Litmas Red MW torch (2.45 GHz, 3 kW), which is able to generate plasma in a state close to Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) in temperature range of 1000-5000 K at atmospheric pressure. We present spatial characteristics of the generated MW plasma a...

Characteristics of Helium Microwave-Induced Atmospheric Pressure Plasma for Fine Particle Analysis

Helium microwave-induced plasma (He-MIP) for trace element analysis is generated by a 2.45 GHz microwave power ( ~ 1 kW) with the Okamoto cavity of the surface wave mode at atmospheric pressure, and an iron excitation temperature and an electron density of the plasma are measured. With 0.8 kW input microwave power, an excitation temperature of 8000 K and the electron density of 2 x 10/cm are ob...

Electronic Excitation Temperature Profiles in an Air Microwave Torch

A 0.9 to 1.5 kW, 2.45 GHz atmospheric pressure air microwave plasma torch has been operated efficiently with less than 1 % reflected power. The plasma is sustained in a 28 mm internal diameter fused quartz tube which penetrates perpendicularly through the wide walls of a tapered and shorted WR-284 (72 x 17 mm cross-section) waveguide. A study has been made of the effects of power and airflow on...

Microwave plasma conversion of volatile organic compounds.

A microwave-induced, steam/Ar/O2, plasma "torch" was operated at atmospheric pressure to determine the feasibility of destroying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of concern. The plasma process can be coupled with adsorbent technology by providing steam as the fluid carrier for desorbing the VOCs from an adsorbent. Hence, N2 can be excluded by using a relatively inexpensive carrier gas, and the...
